About ESPN2 Africa

ESPN is an American sports network specializing in sports. It is owned by ESPN, Inc and operated by The Walt Disney Company Latin America. It is available in most Latin American countries. It was initially launched on September 15, 1988 as a test channel, but its official launch came on March 31, 1989.

ESPN 2 Africa is one of the geo-specific channels launched by the network. It is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and Hears Communications. Its area of influence is the Sub-Saharan Africa, and it started airing its content in English, French, and Portuguese, but the latter was eventually dropped from the general programming. ESPN Africa replaced Setanta Sports and Setanta Action. It is frequently used as an overflow channel to ESPN Africa whenever there is one more live event taking place and to which ESPN Africa has broadcasting rights.

Over the years, ESPN 2 Africa has covered disciplines such as football, handball, basketball, motorsports, mixed martial arts, hockey, baseball, rugby, and darts being aired on this channel.

Speaking about football, ESPN 2 Africa has covered domestic leagues such as the Scottish Premiership, the Dutch Eredivisie, the Belgian Pro League, the EFL Championship, the Indian Super League, and the Major League Soccer. International tournaments covered by ESPN Africa also included the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, two of the top competitions in South America.

The channel has aired its content in Standard Definition since its launch.
